NRHS Playoff Round-up

The Nashoba Regional boys indoor track team continued its undefeated season by winning the Division 3 championships on Friday at the Reggie Lewis Center in Roxbury.

Stow senior co-captain Conor Megee took the 55 meter hurdles in 7.76 seconds and teamed with Stow junior Justin DeBenedetto, sophomore Alex Schryver, and senior Jake Abraham on the 8th-place 4x200 relay team. Stow juniors Coby Horowitz and Brendan Aylaian also made significant contributions, both as members of the first-place 4x800 relay team (with seniors Joe Doyle and Mike Dandley) and as individuals. Horowitz finished second in the 600 meters, and Aylaian placed fourth in the mile.

On the girls' side, senior co-captain Alee Wade led the Chieftains' efforts with a second-place finish in the 300 meter dash. The 4x200 relay team of Wade and Stow sophomores Emily Clark, Rachel Busch, and Aubrie Vannasse finished 10th. Clark also placed 12th in the long jump and 22nd in the 55 meter hurdles. The Chieftains ended up 15th out of 30 teams.

Megee, Horowitz, Aylaian, Doyle, Wade, and the boys' 4x800 relay team will compete in the All State meet this Friday, at the same location.

JV Hockey Wins Division

The Nashoba JV hockey team captured the Coughlin Conference title on Friday with a thrilling 1-0 overtime victory over Holliston. Sophomore Alex Pappas scored the winning goal on a breakaway, midway through the overtime period. In goal, freshmen Nick Riseman and Ryan Lombardozzi combined to shut out the Panthers. The win marked the first league title for any Chieftains hockey team since the varsity won the Russell Conference championship in 2001.

Boys Basketball Makes the Playoffs

Stow senior co-captain Paul Murray scored a team-high 15 points against Bromfield last Thursday, including a key tiebreaker late in the game, to lead the Nashoba Regional boys' basketball team to the playoffs with a 53-49 win.

The 6-13 Chieftains enter the Division 2 Tournament as the 15 seed and the only team with a losing record. Because the team plays the majority of its schedule against teams outside its division, Nashoba qualified for the postseason by winning at least half of its Division 2 matchups. The Chieftains were scheduled to travel to Northbridge (17-3) last night to face the 2-seed Rams.

Getting to that point was a little more difficult than expected. Against host Bromfield, Nashoba led by as many as 15 points early in the second half, but the Trojans battled back to tie the score at 46 with less than two minutes remaining. That's when Murray hit a layup to retake the lead. Bromfield twice pulled within a single point, but a field goal from Chris Parenteau and another from Murray in the final half-minute put the game out of reach.

Two Skiers Compete in State Meet

A strong season by Stow senior Allison Wyand earned her a spot representing the Chieftains at the state alpine ski meet, which was scheduled for yesterday at Berkshire East Ski Area in Charlemont. Wyand, a co-captain who was the Chieftain girls' top point-scorer this season, was slated to race in the 124th slot. Senior captain John Malley qualified to represent the boys' team, racing 24th. Wyand and Malley each earned their spots at the state meet by finishing among the top 12 in the Mass Bay West Omega League.
