The symbiosis between medicine and sports intensifies every day, whether it involves steroid use in baseball players, brain damage in oft-concussed football players, or ACL injuries in teenage girls.
As a writer, that intersection is where I call home.
Seventeen years as a medical writer have made me adept at deciphering and demystifying complex topics. In my more recent experience as a sportswriter, like a soccer goalie, I've become all about the angles. I'm constantly in search of a fresh take on what everyone else is covering. And as the former editor-in-chief of a monthly magazine, I understand the importance of deadlines, editorial style, and writing to length.
Reporting on location is also one of my strengths. I've covered the 2000 Olympics in Sydney and conferences all over Europe; truthfully, I'd go just about anywhere for the right story.
