Researchers who specialize in sports injury prevention have gravitated toward the most dramatic injuries, those that result in an athlete needing to be helped off the field. Studies of such acute injuries — anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears, ankle sprains, hamstring pulls — accounted for the majority of the proceedings at the World Congress on Sports Injury Prevention.
But in the opening keynote address, two luminaries argued that sports injury prevention should be focused equally — if not more — on the types of injuries that are signified not by crutches or casts but by pain that increases gradually until the sufferer can no longer play through it: overuse injuries.
